How to create a beautifully landscaped back garden on a budget

A beautiful garden has the potential to bring so much joy to people’s lives, but a stunning outdoor space can feel out of reach for those on a small budget.

Don’t despair, though. By using a smaller amount of materials in a clever way, revamping what you have and shopping wisely, you’ll be able to transform your garden - even if funds are low and your time is also at a premium.

Plant a new border

A flower bed border is a great way of adding shape and definition to your garden without needing to spend a lot of cash.

First, decide on what kind of border would complement your garden’s overall design. Bricks look brilliant in traditional schemes, while pebbles and rocks will create a more natural look. Once you have decided on the kind of look you want to achieve, it’s time to mark out where you want your border to go and get to work planting your favourite flowers, shrubs and perennials.

Experiment with stones and plants to produce an attention-grabbing rockery

A rockery is an even easier way to add interest to your garden, and it should take you no more than an afternoon for you to put together. As well as providing a centrepiece for your landscape, your rockery will allow you to grow plants that are more suited to mountainous areas; it’s a great opportunity to expand your gardening repertoire. Late winter is the best time of year to build a rockery, as the ground will be soft and easy to work with at this time of year.

Set aside time for a quick paint job

A fresh lick of paint can work wonders in a tired-looking garden. Whether you have a patio set that needs a new coat of varnish or some wooden planters that need a little TLC, setting aside an hour or two to transform them really will pay off. Be sure to buy paint that is suitable for outdoor use, and don’t forget some varnish for extra protection. After all, we all know how much havoc the Great British weather can wreak on our back gardens (and everything in them!).

Try out a new paved pathway

If you want to add some paving to your garden but don’t have the budget to install a large patio area, why not opt for a pathway instead? A winding path will help to break up the expanse of any sized lawn, and it will lead the eye to areas that you want to draw attention to. There are many kinds of paving for you to choose from, but natural stone is particularly on trend at the moment.

Keep your eye out for bargains

Last but not least – be a savvy shopper! If there was something you had your eye on in the summer, but it was way out of your budget, then be sure to check back and see how much it is now. Stores often try and shift their stock in the winter as they prepare for next summer, so you will be able to snap up some new pieces for your garden at a fraction of the price you would have paid a few months earlier. You can start with Milestone’s Value range.

With a little elbow grease and some shrewd purchases, a beautiful new garden awaits!

Creating a beautifully landscaped garden doesn’t need to cost a fortune, and you’ll be surprised at just how far your money can go. So why not get started on those little jobs today? By the time next summer rolls around, your garden will be the envy of all your neighbours – and they’ll be even more envious of the amazing results you’ve achieved when they realise how little you had to spend!
